About the VII-th session of the Secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions Print E-mail

On 28-29 October 2008 Almaty hosted VII Session of the Secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions which was chaired by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan / Head of the Secretariat of the Congress.

Representatives of various confessions and religious organizations took part in the Secretariat Session. The participants had a fruitful exchange of opinions on all agenda items. All members of the Secretariat contributed to the discussions.

The following decisions were made with regard to proposals of the participants:

1. To define the date of the Third Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions as 1-2 July 2009.

2. To define the subject of the Third Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions as:

-The role of religious leaders in building a world of tolerance, mutual respect and cooperation.

To define the themes for break-out session as:

1) Moral and spiritual values;

2) Justice, peace and security;

3) Environment and harmony;

4) Dialogue and cooperation;

5) Solidarity, especially in periods of crisis.

3. To hold the VIII Session of the Secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana on 29-30 June 2009.

In the course of the session a working group, consisting of representatives of religious leaders - participants of the Congress, was established for preparation of outcome documents of the Third Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his closing remarks to participants of the Secretariat Session highlighted that in a modern world the interreligious dialogue is becoming an important instrument for achieving solidarity and accord.

Stability and prosperity, peace, security and harmony on a planet - to all these our aspirations lead. This understanding is especially important when international terrorism is becoming a strategic threat for security of humanity, and a global community should join efforts for preservation and development of cooperation.

‘We have managed to move beyond dissent and come to the uniform understanding of the important mission of the interfaith dialogue, and agreements that we have achieved will be a strong foundation for continuation of our fruitful cooperation' - highlighted the Head of the Secretariat.

The VIII Session of the Secretariat will be another important landmark in promoting the interfaith dialogue on a planet, initiated in 2003 by Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan, and supported by leaders of world confessions, Heads of States and powerful international organizations.
