Born:  20 May 1945 in Barcelona, Spain;

Education:

In 1969 graduated from Barcelona University of Nuclear Physics (Physics Faculty);
In 1975 received the doctor's degree in physics, Barcelona University of Nuclear Physics;
From 1988 he is professor of nuclear and atomic physics at Barcelona University of Nuclear Physics;
Trainee at Barcelona, Strasbourg universities and college in Dublin (nuclear subject), has research works.

Political Career:

1984 - 1992 - Director of the radiation physics laboratory, Barcelona;

1988 - 1992 - Speaker of the People's Party at Catalonia Parliament;

1991 - 1995 - Member of the Municipal Council of Barcelona;

1991 - 1996 - Member of the National Executive Committee; and Chairman of the People's Party of Christian Democrats in Catalonia;

1990 - 1996 -Chairman of the People's Party of Christian Democrats at the Regional Parliament of Catalonia;

1995 - 1999 - Regional Senator;

1995 - 1999 - Chairman of the Committee on Education and Culture of the Senate of the Parliament;

1999 - 2004 - Member of the European Parliament;

1999 - 2002 - Vice-President of the European Parliament;

2002 - 2004 - Re-elected as Vice-President of the European Parliament;

Since 2004 - Elected as a member of the European Parliament (for the second term);

Since 2004 - First Vice-President of the European Parliament;

Simultaneously:  Member of the EP Committee on Industry, Studies and Energy;Substituting member of the EP Committee on Culture and Education; Member of the EP delegation on relations with Turkey; Substituting member of the EP Delegation on relations with the Mediterranean countries

- Author of several books in Spanish;

- Nuclear Energy Prize Winner of the Spanish Council of Nuclear Power (1983).

Spouse: Amparo Fuertes Ferragut.
